  Lyris was born on a farming ship to a very large, simple family. By the time she was born, most of her siblings were already grown, the girls still working on the ship and the boys sent off to do their government-mandatory ten years of military service. She spent most of her childhood aboard the same ship, though her family was selected for an experimental colonization effort on a newly discovered planet.
  
  The colony did thrive, even though it was on the outskirts of protected space and became one of the universe's main agricultural hubs. During this time, Lyris was being taught how to pilot a ship by one of her many older brothers who returned from his service early after losing both of his legs and most of his fingers during a skirmish with pirates. Although women are not accepted into the military in her culture, her brother encouraged her to apply regardless in the hopes they would accept her anyway.
  
  Although women's rights were being actively fought for in the capitol, Lyris was still laughed at and wasn't even allowed to attempt to take the piloting test. Instead of giving up on her dreams, she left her colony and accepted a position aboard the HTV Styx as it was the only ship that would even consider her.
